I think the title of this post speaks for itself. Our dogs were sprayed by a skunk. Whitney took a direct hit to the face and Autumn tried to kiss the thing.
Friday night, my mom picked up the kids so Jonathan and I could have a date night. Jonathan got home early, he shaved, we got dressed, I wore my new date pants, and we were ready to go meet some friends. I went to the den to find my purse and I was greeted at the dog gate by Whitney. She was foaming at the mouth, nasty green foam. Then I smelt it. The smell of burnt tire. The smell of a skunk on fire. I started yelling and Jonathan came running into the den. I made him search the house for this skunk. I just knew it was in the house because of the smell. Thankfully it wasn't in the house. Autumn had chased it under my new patio set. We made the dogs come inside, put the dog door in and the skunk came out. Before he disappeared he tried to come in our dog door!!
The strangest part about this story is that we live in the middle of our neighborhood, in the center of the street, with two giant dogs in our backyard. Why would it pick our house? Also, I kept yelling for Jonathan to shoot it (because I grew up on a farm in Arkansas and if you didn't like something you shot it, the end), He told me I was crazy you can't shoot things in a neighborhood with a shot gun, I told him it was Texas we can shoot whatever we want. Apparently there are laws but don't break in my house or I'll shoot you, the end. Back to the skunk.
I'm 99% sure Whitney was hanging half way out the dog door and half way in the house when it sprayed her. Our backdoor smells terrible as does our breakfast room and of course the dog.
So the point of this story is to tell you how to remove the skunk smell from the dog and then your house.
Dog: Immediately put on some old clothes and find some gloves. Mix 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of dawn (or whatever liquid soap you use). Wash the dog with an old cloth or sponge with the mixture. Let it foam up and sit for 4-5 min. The longer the better! After that time rinse your dog. I bathed the dogs immediately after in their lavender dog shampoo. Make sure not to get either mixture in their eyes. This got rid of the smell immediately, except for Whitney face but I was trying to avoid her eyes. (source)
House: Option 1- Heat the oven to 250. Put a cup of coffee grounds on a cookie sheet and bake for 5-10 minutes with the door open.
Option 2- This works the best. Open all your windows and turn on the fan. Mix Vinegar (I used a gallon), a cut up apple (I used two) and 4-5 tablespoons of Cinnamon. Bring to a boil on the stove. When it boils divide into smaller bowls and put in each room affected by smell. It should be steaming. I left mine all day. It seemed to remove a lot of the odor. But of course the best remedy is time and air.
That's it. That's all I know. I hope we are never skunked again.
